1. Overview
Wēi Líng Xiān (威灵仙) — Clematis chinensis root and rhizome — is one of the principal herbs in Chinese medicine for expelling Wind-Damp and unblocking the channels. It belongs to the category of Herbs that dispel Wind-Damp. It is particularly valued for treating migratory joint pain, stiffness and limited range of motion in rheumatic conditions, and has a useful additional action of softening hard, lodged fish bones in the throat.

5. Incompatibilities
Wēi Líng Xiān (威灵仙) Clematis Root is not listed in either of the two classical incompatibility texts — Shi Ba Fan (Eighteen Antagonisms) or Shi Jiu Wei (Nineteen Mutual Inhibitions). As with every Chinese herb it should be prescribed only as part of a balanced formula by a registered Chinese herbalist (RCHM), who will check for interactions with any other herbs and prescription medications you are taking.
6. Cautions
Avoid in Blood deficiency without Wind-Damp and in Yin deficiency. Use cautiously long-term — the herb is strongly dispersing. Always consult a qualified Chinese herbalist registered with the RCHM.
Pattern contraindications
Use cautiously in Yin and Blood deficiency without underlying Wind-Damp — these herbs are typically drying and can deplete fluids. Avoid prolonged courses where the underlying deficiency has not been addressed.
Modern drug interactions
Several Wind-Damp herbs (Sang Ji Sheng, Du Zhong) lower blood pressure and have an additive effect with antihypertensives. Tell your GP if you take BP-lowering medication.
