Bai Zi Ren Wan — Biota Seed Pill
On this page
Overview
Bai Zi Ren Wan — the “Biota Seed Pill” — appears in the Song-dynasty Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang. It is a gentle Heart-nourishing formula centred on Bai Zi Ren (biota seed) for Heart-Blood and Heart-Yin deficiency with mild Shen disturbance: difficulty falling asleep, light sleep with vivid dreams, mild palpitations, mild anxiety. Bai Zi Ren is one of the most important seeds in TCM for “nourishing the Heart and calming the spirit”, paired here with Suan Zao Ren (sour jujube seed) and other Blood-nourishing herbs.
I prescribe Bai Zi Ren Wan as part of bespoke herbal formulas from pharmaceutical-grade granules sourced from Sun Ten in Taiwan.
TCM pattern
Bai Zi Ren Wan is prescribed for Heart-Blood / Heart-Yin deficiency with mild Shen disturbance:
- Difficulty falling asleep, sleep-onset insomnia
- Light sleep with vivid dreams
- Mild palpitations, particularly at night
- Mild anxiety with mental restlessness
- Pale complexion, mild dizziness
- Dry stools, mild constipation (biota seed has lubricating action)
- Tongue — pale, thin coat
- Pulse — thin, possibly slightly weak
Key herbs
- Bai Zi Ren (Sm. Platycladi, 9–15g) — chief; nourishes Heart-Blood; calms Shen; moistens Intestines
- Suan Zao Ren (Sm. Ziziphi Spinosae, 9–15g) — nourishes Heart-Blood; calms Shen; specifically for insomnia
- Mai Men Dong (Tb. Ophiopogonis, 6–12g) — nourishes Heart-Yin; clears mild deficient Heat
- Sheng Di Huang (Rx. Rehmanniae, 9–15g) — nourishes Yin; cools Blood mildly

Cautions
Not appropriate for excess Heat insomnia (Liver Fire, Heart Fire) or Phlegm-Heat patterns — the nourishing herbs would aggravate these.
Mild lubricating effect — reduce dose if loose stools develop.
